From a little-known town on the North Dakota prairies, to
the rolling hills of Texas, from the rugged coastline of
Maine, to the sun-drenched shores of California, and a
lot of places in between, the 40-foot crane statue has
been the object of many coffee shop talks.
Truckers have carried the story across the vastness of
this great country and with the help of a writer, John
MacDonald of the AP, the pictures and story have made
headlines in many nationally known newspapers.
What had started out as a simple promotion for the city of
Steele, ND and its Betterment Club has turned into a
much bigger enterprise.
"Sandy", the World's Largest Sandhill Crane, has been
photographed by visitors from many foreign countries as
well as most of the United States. The Crane site
features a well-kept area of native and introduced
species of trees and a plot of native grasses, which for
all practical purposes have disappeared from the
landscape due to extensive farming. Perennial flowers
indigenous to the area and annuals that delight the
viewer's eye in the summer also add to the beauty. The
entire area includes about 30,000 square feet easily
accessible from Highway I-94 off the Steele exit (#200).
Free of charge, the project has been sustained through
donations and other fundraising projects.
