History
In 1998, the idea of erecting a giant Sandhill Crane was born.  Once it
was completed, someone had to be responsible for upkeep and
maintenance.  By 2000, our non-profit organization, the World's
Largest Sandhill Crane Foundation, was formed to improve the area
and provide maintenance support for the crane.  The majority of the
work comes from many volunteers around the Steele area.
Community Education
Birding groups, 4-H, Ducks Unlimited, and school groups have used
the site as a learning tool because it illustrates the various types of
grass and flowers found in our county and is readily available and
easily accessible.  Visitors can discover how and why birds, butterflies,
and other insects are attracted to certain plants.

Birding tours around Kidder County have also used us as their tour
headquarters.

The Foundation has supported and contributed to the annual Christmas Stocking, helped sponsor the annual Appreciation

Foundation Meetings
Meetings for the Foundation are open to the public and held on the third Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the office of the Steele
Coordinator located in the Community Building.
Sandy and the Environment
Once the statue was erected in 1999, there was so much more to making the site truly spectacular.  Click here to read more
about the development of the landscaping, flower gardens, waterfall, and kiosks.
